Dead singer’s kin demand arrest of her husband

The relatives and friends of Shanti Sharma, a Hindustani classical singer who died under mysterious circumstances in April this year, met the Gurgaon police commissioner on Monday, demanding the arrest of her husband Dinesh Sharma. Sharma is an accused in the case.
They alleged the Gurgaon police had initially filed a case of suicide but after a local court’s order, they registered a murder case in May They also moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court when the police failed to arrest the accused. When contacted, Sharma refused to comment, saying the case is sub judice.
On April 22, the DLF police station filed a case of suicide when the body of 52-year-old Shanti Sharma was found in front of her house at ‘A’ block in DLF City. Her husband had then said Shanti, who was depressed after her daughter’s death, committed suicide by jumping from the third floor.
Shanti’s sister Geetha Jayram, however, said, “The Gurgaon police were influenced by the husband of my sister. We moved the local court, which directed the police to register a case of murder.”
Kamakshi Jayram, another sister, said, “Shanti had no apparent reasons to take such a step and no suicide note was found.”
Gurgaon police commissioner Mohinder Lal assured that he would take up the matter with the DCP and ACP concerned of the DLF area. But Shanti’s relatives said, “We are still not convinced that justice will be done.”
