Demanding immediate punishment for the convict who justified the gruesome gangrape of a medical student on December 16, 2012, in a prison interview, the victim’s father blamed the “judicial system” and said such remarks would only encourage other rapists.
“The person who can do such a disgusting act... can say anything. He should be hanged immediately. I appeal to the court to hang him as soon as possible,” the victim’s father said when asked about his reaction to the BBC documentary “India’s Daughter”.
The documentary stirred a controversy after some of the comments by one of the convicts Mukesh Singh hit headlines on Monday, much before the documentary was aired. The documentary is due to be aired on International Women’s Day on March 8.
“The comments are shameful and are a mockery of the law,” the victim’s mother told PTI and asked the authorities to take legal action against Mukesh Singh, the driver of the bus in which the 23-year-old student was brutally gangraped by six men.
In a prison interview conducted by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin, Singh said women who went out at night had only themselves to blame if they attracted the attention of gangs of molesters.
“A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy,” he had said. Singh also said that had the girl and her friend not tried to fight back, the gang would not have inflicted the savage beating, which led to her death later.
The victim’s mother said crimes against women were increasing because of the mindset that women should not go out at night.
“It is not a big thing for the accused to pass a statement like this. One who is jailed for such a heinous crime can pass a statement on anybody,” the victim’s mother said.
