Now, you have another excuse to check your Facebook account before leaving home. In a bid to reduce driving hassles for motorists, the Delhi traffic police have decided to upload a list of faulty and defunct traffic signals on their page on social networking site Facebook and also on their own website

The police, who have missed several deadlines to put a much-hyped intelligent traffic system in place, will update the list everyday from Tuesday.

This will enable commuters to know about the city’s non-functional traffic signals in advance and plan their route accordingly.

“Our Facebook page has over 80,000 members, who will benefit by this decision,” said a senior traffic police officer.

The Delhi Police regularly receives complaints from road users about non-working signals at several intersections. Two agencies — CMS and Keltron — maintain the traffic signals in Delhi.

According to the traffic police, uploading the list online will have two-fold benefits.

“One, commuters will be able to steer clear of busy stretches where signals are not working. Also, through Facebook’s interactive page, they will also be able to tell us of faulty signals, which have not been included in our list, so immediate action can be taken to repair them,” said Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

The traffic police will also use mobile traffic lights at busy intersections where signals are not working.

They already have one such mobile traffic signal and will purchase four more in a couple of months.

There are around 760 traffic signals across the city, of which 35 have officially been defunct for some time.

Some of them have been non-functional for the past six to seven months.

Some of these traffic signals are at busy intersections such as Maa Anandmai Marg, Shankar Road-Ganga Ram Hospital Marg, Aruna Asaf Ali Road, Ashram Chowk, Modi Mill Flyover, Aurobindo Chowk, CR Park Market 1 and Qutub Minar Metro Station Chowk among others.
