Kavita said that her daughter was allegedly being harassed by her ex-lover Ravi Kumar since Diwali last year. Last Saturday, she claimed, the harassment had taken an ugly turn after Ravi physically assaulted her daughter for the first time.

Twenty two-year-old Ravi had apparently stopped the girl when she was walking towards her workplace in Sangam Vihar. Suspecting that the girl had been talking to another man over the phone, Ravi then slapped her,” Kavita alleged.

Kavita later confronted Ravi and threatened to report him to police, even as the youth begged for forgiveness. “I made a mistake. Had I reported him to the police then, my daughter would not be in this condition today,” Kavita told HT on Wednesday.

The family’s inaction allegedly emboldened Ravi and he continued to issue threats over the next few days. “Ravi had warned me that if my sister married someone else, he would kill her and then kill himself,” alleged the victim’s older sister.

“He would say ‘kahin ka nahi chhodoonga’ (I will not spare her). We never thought he could carry out his threat,” she added.

Ravi allegedly again confronted the victim as she walked to her office on Wednesday morning. This time he was armed with a bottle of acid that he tried to force down the victim’s throat, leaving her face, neck and throat burnt.

Police as well as the girl’s mother confirmed that the victim and Ravi had been in a relationship for two years till last Diwali. While the girl’s mother had consented to the couple’s decision to marry, Ravi’s parents allegedly opposed it.

“Ravi’s parents did not want the marriage because they belonged from an upper caste. Since my daughter realized that marriage was impossible, she called off the relationship,” the mother said.

But with Ravi insistent on continuing the relationship, the victim had no option but to lie to him that she was seeing someone else.
