A day after a four-storey building collapsed in West Delhi’s Vishnu Nagar, rescue teams retrieved three more bodies from the debris on Sunday taking the death toll to five.

Police officials said nine-year-old Akansha was the last one to be pulled out at the end of the 15-hour operation, but was declared brought dead by hospital authorities.

“A total of 13 people were pulled out from under the debris, five of whom were declared brought dead. The remaining eight are undergoing treatment,” he said.

The deceased were identified as Om Prakash (60), who was visiting the owner Brij Lal at his first-floor home, Sadma (20) who lived on the second floor, Beena (45), Sarbati (35) and Akansha (9), who lived on the fourth floor.

Himanshu, a local, said there was a salon on the ground floor, and Sadma’s family was away visiting relatives for Eid.

“My father lived alone in the house, while my family and I live nearby. The news of the collapse came as a shock. We reached almost instantly and began pulling out people. I saw my father soaked in blood. We rushed him to the hospital, his condition is now normal,” said Lal’s son Deepak.

Ravi (30), who lived on the fourth floor, lost his mother, younger sister and aunt. His father and brother were injured.

“I was watching TV at the time. I remember my aunt Sarbati saying she felt vibrations, although I continued watching TV and fell asleep. Next thing I know, I was lying under the debris. I tried to remove it, but I couldn’t,” he said.

The Delhi government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for families that lost an adult, Rs 1 lakh for losing a minor, Rs 50,000 for those with major injuries and Rs 10,000 for minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led South Delhi Municipal Corporation suspended three engineers for lapse of duty.
