A speeding white Innova zoomed past a traffic check point in Delhi despite being signalled to stop, prompting a constable to jump on his motorcycle and give chase.
A 2.4km chase later, the cop caught up with the vehicle, gave the errant driver a talking to and handed him a challan for Rs 400 that was promptly paid.
Just another day in the life of a Delhi traffic policeman, or so it would seem. Except that the vehicle had a beacon on its roof and the passenger in the rear seat was none other than the city’s deputy chief minister, Manish Sisodia.
The constable, who did not wish to be named, was nonchalant about giving the AAP government’s second-in-command a speeding ticket on the evening of June 12. “I didn’t feel it was any different from the hundred-odd challans I have issued. I had no interaction with Sisodia ji,” he said.
“The problem was that despite the vehicle being stopped at the picket, the driver sped away.”
The policeman said that though he quickly realised it was a VIP vehicle, he didn’t know who he was chasing until he saw Sisodia. “I was a bit taken aback but that did not stop me from performing my duty,” he said, adding that he exchanged no words with the deputy CM, who remained silent all through.
Calls to the senior AAP leader for comment went unanswered. Sisodia’s official vehicle was stopped at an intersection in northeast Delhi’s Khajuri Chowk after speed interceptors caught it shooting the 60km speed limit, senior Delhi Police officers said. But instead of slowing to a halt, it zoomed past.
“We had stopped around four vehicles for speeding at that time and as soon as the VIP vehicle sped away, the other drivers demanded we fine the vehicle with the beacon first,” said a traffic official.
Hot on its heels, the constable said he signalled the Innova to stop multiple times. It finally came to a stop near the Wazirabad bridge after it was intercepted by onlookers who had seen the cop’s attempts to stop it.
