Does the reality TV show ‘Emotional Atyachar’ spreading vulgarity and is a blot on social and moral values of the society as alleged widely?
The two-judge bench headed by chief justice of the Delhi high court Dipak Misra has decided to do a reality check by viewing the CD of the last two episodes of the show in their chamber on July 19.
“Let the ministry of information and broadcasting make arrangements for screening of the show so that we can verify the allegations ourselves. Let the CDs of the last two episodes be made available on July 19,” said the bench.
The court was hearing a PIL filed by an NGO which sought a ban on the reality show. “Through the programme, the TV channel has been hurting the feelings of viewers, spreading vulgarity and demoting social and moral values in our society,” petitioner Sanjay Tiwari Ujala and his lawyer Rahul Mehra told the bench. They also alleged that the show violated the government’s morality guidelines.
In the reality show a person who doubts his/her boyfriend’s/girlfriend’s loyalty, can ask for a loyalty test on him/her. The person checking his/her partner’s loyalty is referred to as the lead, while the person on whom the loyalty test is being performed is called the suspect. The crew members follow him/her and also ask another boy/girl to act as if he/she is intimate with him/her. These are caught on camera and shown to the lead.
The court had on April 17 sought the response of the centre on the allegations. Appearing for the centre, senior lawyer Neeraj Kishan Kaul denied all the allegations and said the programme had the certification of the censor board and the ministry of information and broadcasting. But certain things are in the realm of privacy. Let us see for ourselves, justice Misra said ordering the CDs.
The PIL also sought cancellation of the license of the channel for showing such a programme.
