Two days after his daughter died, an impoverished shopkeeper has been running from pillar to post to bring the men whom he thinks were behind her murder to book.
Suresh Kumar, a resident of northwest Delhi’s Rithala village, claims that his 16-year-old daughter was sexually assaulted by four men including her employer before being murdered and dumped outside her house.
On their part, the police said they were waiting for the girl’s post-mortem examination to be conducted before registering a case - as per the law - and that investigations were underway.
“My daughter worked at a local factory which manufactures shoe laces to supplement the meagre income I generate from the small provisions store that I run in Vijay Vihar,” Kumar said.
On Friday evening, Kumar alleges, he found his daughter’s body dumped outside his house with apparent injuries on her neck which were, according to him, inflicted to fatally wound her. This was after she was gang-raped by four men at the factory where she worked.
But when he contacted the local police, the reaction which this grieving father was able to elicit was far from what he had imagined.
“I was at my shop when someone called to tell me that my daughter had been murdered,” Kumar recalled. “When I rushed to her factory, I was told that they had taken her body to my house where I found it dumped outside our house.”
“The policemen who came to examine my house later said they had reason to believe that she had committed suicide by hanging herself. They haven’t even registered a case yet,” Kumar exclaimed.
“First of all, how could she have hung herself in a room the ceiling of which is as low as seven feet? Secondly, when I was going home, I saw her employer and three other men coming from the opposite side; what were they doing there with her body?”
Kumar said he was certain that his daughter had been sexually assaulted before being murdered. Police sources said her post-mortem examination would be conducted by a panel of doctors on Monday.
When contacted, Sanjay Kumar, additional commissioner of police (outer) said the case was being investigated from all angles.
