A 35-year-old factory worker was arrested by the west Delhi police on Sunday for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl at her Moti Nagar residence, police said.
The incident took place on Friday when the victim was alone at home with her younger sister.
The accused, identified as one Awadh Raj, reportedly lived in the same neighbourhood as the girl. Police said Awadh was known to the girl’s family.
He was arrested on Saturday following an attempt to rape complaint lodged against him by the victim’s family.
A police officer said the incident took place when the victim, a 7-year-old girl, was alone with her sister.
Awadh, who works in a fan manufacturing factory in Moti Nagar, entered the victim’s house and tried to force himself on her.
“The victim’s younger sister sensed trouble and raised an alarm. Hearing her screams, some neighbours rushed to their rescue. But by the time they arrived, Awadh had managed to flee. The girl’s parents were informed about the incident and they lodged a complaint,” said the officer.
The child’s medical examination confirmed sexual assault which, however, was not rape, police said. The accused was booked under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, police said.
