Depressed over losing crores of rupees in cricket betting, a 39-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a tree near Parliament on Thursday morning. A 23-page suicide note was found next to the body, police said.
Ram Dayal Verma of Shivpuri district in Madhya Pradesh came to Delhi on Thursday morning and went straight to Vijay Chowk near Parliament where he hung himself from a tree. A black bag containing several documents and his railway ticket was recovered from the spot.
“It was around 7.15 am that Verma’s body was found hanging from a tree located between Rail Bhawan and the media parking centre near Vijay Chowk, close to Parliament. An inquest has been initiated into the matter. His family members have been informed about the incident,” DCP, New Delhi, Jatin Narwal said.
In his suicide note, Verma claimed that he had lost several crores in betting on IPL and other matches. He also wrote that he had taken a loan from people for betting, hoping to make good money. However, when he lost all the money including his life savings, he had no option but to end his life, he wrote in the suicide note.
According to the police,Verma left home on Wednesday afternoon after telling his wife that he was going to Delhi for a meeting. It appears that he left home with a plan to hang himself and penned the suicide note in the train on way to Delhi, police added.
When the police called his wife to inquire about him, she was aware about his betting business and wanted to know if he has been arrested. Verma’s suicide note also mentions that even though he had lost money in betting earlier, it had become a habit and the loss he suffered this time was beyond repairs.
We have sent out our teams to identify where he put his money and if he had an affiliation to a particular racket. The investigation is on,” a senior police officer said.
