Former Delhi state Congress chief Rambabu Sharma (53) died after a massive cardiac arrest on Wednesday at 1.15 am. He had been battling oral cancer for the last several years and was admitted in Apollo Hospital for the last 12 days.
With Sharma’s demise, one of the old vanguards of Delhi Congress fell.
At his funeral on Wednesday afternoon, apart from the rank and file of Delhi Congress, politicians from across the spectrum turned up to pay their last respects.
Condoling his death, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the party would miss him. Congress state chief Jai Prakash Aggarwal said the party had lost a seasoned and dedicated leader. “I have known him for the last 25 years. From the beginning of his political career in fact,” he said.
Sharma first contested and won a municipal election from Nand Nagri ward in 1997. Within a year, he became the leader of Opposition in the MCD and, in 2002, he was re-elected from the same ward and appointed leader of the House and chairman of the standing committee.
From 2002 onwards, he was virtually calling the shots as the MCD chief and often ran into spats with Dikshit. He was removed from the Congress state chief’s post in September 2007.
