The issue of provinding security cover to Delhi MLAs was the cause of disruption in the state assembly on Tuesday after the news of an attack on the office of a Congress MLA reached the House.
Cutting across party lines, MLAs demanded that the Commissioner of Police be called to the House and the sentiment of the House be conveyed to him.
The Speaker later assured the House that the Commissioner of Police will be called, before adjourning the house till 3.30 pm.
"It is a very serious matter. If elected representatives are not safe in the Capital then one can imagine the plight of the common man," Mukesh Sharma, parliamentary secretary to the chief minister, said.
The members of the House said there have been several instances of MLAs being attacked in the past. Despite the chief minister and speaker meeting the commissioner and asking him to provide personal security officers to each MLA, the Delhi Police has done little, the members said.
"The Chief Minister had promised the House that Delhi government will arrange security for MLAs if the Delhi Police failed to do so. It is really worrisome that the members of the House are being attacked," leader of the opposition Vijay Kumar Malhotra said.
The MLAs did not allow the House to function demanding the Commissioner of Police be called to the House.
Echoing the sentiments of the House, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the issue was indeed sensitive and worrisome, and demanded immediate adjournment of the House.
"It is a very serious matter that the office of the MLA was attacked in broad daylight. I agree with the House that the Commissioner of Police should immediately be called here, the issue debated and a solution found. I request you (the Speaker) to adjourn the House and call the Commissioner," Dikshit said.
