The civic body will hire ex-servicemen or defence personnel to manage its 200-odd surface lots. Also, parking rates will no longer be uniform across the city but will vary, depending on the demand for space.
“The lieutenant governor received a lot of complaints about mismanagement of parking lots. He has directed the MCD to do away with the present contract system and take the help of ex-servicemen or defence personnel as they are more disciplined,” said Ranjan Mukherjee, officer on special duty to the lieutenant governor.
“The parking mafia not only overcharge people but have started encroaching on land not designated for them,” he said.
The MCD will fix rates depending on traffic volume. For instance, a lot in Nehru Place, a commercial hub, might charge Rs 30 an hour but the rate at Govindpuri might be Rs 10.
“Once the contracts of these firm get over, we won’t renew them. We are still working out the parking rates,” MCD commissioner K.S. Mehra said.
The MCD earns Rs 15 crore from these contractors. While the contracts of more than 25 lots have already lapsed, the rest will expire by next month.
