Women officers riding PCR bikes is soon going to be a common sight in Delhi. As many as 460 women constables are undergoing strenuous training to become beat constables, while 60 of them are also being trained by the CRPF (central reserve police force) to tackle serious incidents such as terror attacks and riots.
The Delhi Police is encouraging women to take up challenging posts in the department. These specially trained women constables will be joining the police force in September. “We want to give them more space in the department. Earlier, women were restricted to administrative work and traffic management, but now they will have a larger role to play in the police force,” said Delhi police commissioner BK Gupta. “We will post them at visible spots across the city. They have proven themselves by efficiently managing the traffic in busy circles.”
At present, around 7,000 women officers are performing various duties in the Delhi Police, while three districts are being headed by women police officers. The aim of this special training is to make women constables more confident so that they can match the skills of their male counterparts.
