The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday slammed AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal for misguiding the trader community by calling himself a ‘baniya’ who understands business.

While addressing a gathering of traders in south Delhi’s Nehru Place on Monday, Kejriwal had said that his party will create a business-friendly environment and make Delhi a wholesale and distribution hub in the country.

“He is misguiding the traders by saying he will end the racket of VAT department. The Goods and Services Tax Bill is already before Parliament and after that VAT holds no ground as tax structure will be same for the entire country. It is not only Baniya community but people from other groups who understand business and forms a major chunk of traders,” said Praveen Shankar Kapoor, Delhi BJP spokesperson.

The Congress also reacted sharply to Kejriwal’s attempt to woo traders.

Traders usually vote for the BJP and AAP is trying to woo them by announcing several measures. Kejriwal had promised to restructure the tax regime in Delhi.

Claiming that VAT collection was highest during AAP’s 49-day rule in Delhi, Kejriwal had said that traders were not harassed during that time.

He had also announced a single-window clearance system for those willing to start business in Delhi. Focusing on VAT, Kejriwal had said, “If AAP rules Delhi for the next five years, we will have the lowest VAT in the country.”
