He is a former national-level volleyball player and is currently employed with the physical education department of a prominent school in Gurgaon.

The incident was reported on the evening of May 26 when the complainant and her husband were visiting a local chemist in Lajpat Nagar.

“They stay in the Ashram area,” said a police officer. “She is pregnant and was suffering from pain when the couple decided to go to a chemist for medicine around midnight.”

According to the police, while the complainant hails from Turkmenistan, her husband is from Afghanistan. They met in Delhi before getting married not long ago.

At the time of the incident, the complainant was standing on the pavement near a chemist while her husband had gone to purchase medicine for her.

“That was when Singh drove down to her in his car and started a conversation. She told him to leave her alone, but Singh refused to back down,” the officer said.

“Instead, he caught hold of her arm and tried to pull her inside his car before driving away when she started screaming. He also snatched her purse in the process,” the officer added.

According to the police, the couple approached them with a complaint the next day with the sole clue that the accused was aboard a Wagon-R bearing the number ‘1160’.

“We began by getting details about all such cars bearing a similar registration number before we were led to Singh’s home at the Freedom Fighter’s Colony in Neb Sarai,” said the officer adding that Singh had been arrested for abduction and robbery.

When questioned, Singh allegedly confessed to his involvement in the crime and told them that his father had retired from the traffic unit of the Delhi Police. His own wife, the police said, happened to be a foreign national and of Columbian-descent.
