The family of 19-year-old Karan Pandey, who was ‘accidentally’ shot during action on ‘stunt’ bikers by Delhi Police on July 28, met Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday. They appealed to her to expedite the enquiry into the case.
According to sources, the New Delhi district office has requested the home department to extend the enquiry deadline as it still needed to view CCTV footage that will be provided by the police.
According to officials, Pandey’s mother and her brother met the chief minister and showed her a copy of the FIR and the post-mortem report. They claimed that it was a case of murder and the police has been trying to shield the inspector.
The family had earlier met police commissioner BS Bassi and the district magistrate of the New Delhi district, who is conducting the enquiry.
“The chief minister assured us of an impartial enquiry into the case. She said the district magistrate had requested for an extension of 15 days to submit the report and the enquiry would be completed within that time,” said Manju Pandey, mother of the victim. The office of the New Delhi district requested Manju, her brother and another boy who had been injured in the firing, to visit the office for recording their statements.
“The enquiry is underway and we will require 15 more days to complete it as we still need to analyse the CCTV footage. A lot of footage is yet to be provided by the police. We have sought an extension and we have asked Manju Pandey to come to our office so that we can record her statement,” said a senior Delhi government official.
Pandey was killed in accidental firing by a policeman on the night of July 28 when they were trying to control a gang of stunt bikers in New Delhi.
