Two labourers were killed and three others injured after a speeding dumper crushed them in south Delhi’s South Extension area in the early hours of Sunday.
The accident took place around 4am when the speeding dumper climbed on to a footpath, where the labourers were repairing a bus shelter, before ramming into the bus stop. The errant driver of the dumper, Mohammad Naim, who had fled the accident spot, was arrested in the afternoon. He is a resident of Ghaziabad.
While one of the deceased was identified as Kisni, a native of Sitamadhi district in Bihar, the other deceased could not be identified till Sunday evening. One of the three injured labourers, identified as Lakhan, was discharged after medical attention while the other two, Vasant, 35, Hallu, 40 are still undergoing treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
According to a senior police officer, the victims were hired as labourers by one Ashish Kumar, a contractor of public works department (PWD), for repairing a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus shelter near AIIMS that had been lying in a dilapidated condition.
“The labourers had wound up their their shift of 9pm to 4am and were sitting on the footpath when the speeding truck coming from Dhaula Kuan side climbed on to it and crushed them before coming to a halt,” said a police officer, adding the errant driver probably dozed of and could not control the vehicle in time.
