The Delhi government has decided to stop the sale of e-rickshaws for the time being. The government has also decided to take traffic police's help to prevent e-rickshaws from plying on arterial roads.
The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by transport minister Ramakant Goswami on Friday. "We have already conveyed the e-rickshaw dealers to stop selling the vehicles till our next order. A formal notice will be sent to them very soon," Goswami said.
These vehicles are not registered by civic agencies and require no permit from the transport department. "We urgently need to bring them under some kind of regulations," he added.
The government is trying to regulate e-rickshaws, which have mushroomed in the city in the past few months. Though e-rickshaws are environment friendly and are a comfortable ride, officials said they have become a traffic hazard and may result in accidents on the roads.
"There is a need to act fast to ensure safety of passengers. These rickshaws do look elegant and comfortable and are non-polluting but we need to examine their technical stability," an official said.
