A 40-year-old part time sweeper was arrested last week on the alleged charges of killing three stray puppies with an iron rod in south Delhi’s Kusumpur Pahari near Vasant Kunj, police said on Saturday.
The arrested man has been identified as Ranbir, a resident of the same locality.
Police said the crime came to the fore on June 10 after a woman from the locality found the body of one of the puppies at a nearby park and called the police control room.
The woman, Anamika alias Priya, told police that she suspected the involvement of her neighbour Ranbir behind the killing. She claimed that two more puppies given birth by the same female stray dog outside her house were also missing.
A police team reached the park and recovered the body of the puppy that was later sent to a veterinary hospital in south Delhi. Anamika told the cops that a female dog in their locality had whelped four puppies a few weeks ago. She also claimed that since the puppies used to live outside their home, she and her son used to feed them.
“The woman told us that Ranbir often objected to her habit of feeding stray dogs as they often barked at him unnecessarily. We picked up Ranbir for questioning and during sustained grilling he confessed to killing three puppies after attacking them with a rod. At his instance, the bodies of other two missing puppies were recovered from an isolated place. A major portion of their bodies was eaten up by other animals,” the officer said.
Ranbir was booked under sections 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., of any value or any animal of the value of `50) of the IPC and section 11(1)(L) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
The FIR was registered at the Vasant Kunj North police station.
