A 28-year-old woman attempted to commit suicide by jumping in front of a metro train at the Janakpuri West station this evening, stalling metro services for 45 minutes on the Dwarka-Noida/Vaishali line.
She was rushed to the Chanan Devi hospital where her condition was stated rto be critical, a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official said.
Though the incident happened at around 7:30 pm, rescue workers were able to bring out the woman from under the train only at 8:15 pm.
Metro operations had to be suspended for the rescue operation.
“The driver applied the emergency brake but couldn’t stop the train on time. The train went over her,” the official said.
The woman, who was yet to be identified, boarded the train at Rajouri Garden and had taken a token for Uttam Nagar West.
“She got down at Janakpuri West. Few minutes later, she jumped on the track,” the official added.
Although the metro services resumed around 8:20 pm, there was heavy rush due to the bunching of trains. Passengers going towards Dwarka were stuck for over an hour and those returning also got delayed as only one track was functional.
“The train stopped at Karol Bagh and driver announced that someone fell on the track. Our Vaishali-bound train moved after about 15 minutes,” said Shradha, a passenger.
