A 32-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a cab driver in South West Delhi’s Dwarka on Thursday night when she was on her way home.
The accused was intercepted and arrested by alert PCR personnel.
According to the woman’s statement, after getting off at the Dwarka Mor metro station she boarded a locally-operating Maruti Eeco cab around 10:30 pm. The woman works at a mall in Rajouri Garden and was on her way back home in Madhu Vihar.
“She said one more passenger had taken the same taxi with her but got down at Rajapuri. Soon after, the accused stopped the car on pretext of checking the fuel cylinder and entered the car and sat next to her,” said a police official.
A senior investigating official said the accused then tried to force himself upon the victim and remove her clothes. The accused allegedly assaulted the victim when she resisted. The police were, however, alerted after a passerby heard the woman scream. “A local resident was walking his dog when he heard the woman screaming. He rushed to a PCR patrolling in the area and narrated the entire incident,” said a police official.
Alerted by the police siren, the accused tried to flee with the woman still in the back seat. “The PCR circulated the initial information on the police communication network. Several teams of Dwarka (North) police station reached the spot with senior police officials and intercepted the cab,” said RA Sanjeev, DCP (South-West).
Sanjeev said the accused tried to flee on foot but was caught. The woman was rushed to a hospital and a case has been registered at the Dwarka North police station under sections of rape, wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.
The accused — a father of three — has been identified as Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Nangli Sakrawati. The accused is a class nine dropout and has been driving cabs for the past eight years.
