With Friday being the last day to use old Rs 500 notes at petrol pumps, long queues were seen at most of the refilling stations in the city.
A petrol pump in Mayur Vihar which generally caters to around three-four cars at a time had a tail back up to outside the pump.
The crowd was expected because the government on Thursday preponed the deadline from December 15 to December 2, giving only a two-day window to people to use their old notes for fuel purchase.
“The crowd comprises mainly people who want to use their old notes. Out of every 10 persons coming, eight are paying in scrapped notes,” said a pump operator in Jangpura.
A petrol pump manager in Lajpat Nagar said sales had gone up by more than three times.
“Since 9.00 am, our pump began receiving motorists who are paying us only in old notes of Rs 500 denominations.”
A pump operator in Connaught Place said the crowd would have been even more but many people had deposited the money in banks by now.
The supply of LPG continues to be in the exempted category for the purpose of payment through old Rs 500 banknotes.
While junking old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 8, the government had allowed their use for utility bill payments for 72 hours. This deadline was extended twice. When the last one was to expire on 24 November, the government came out with another order saying henceforth only old Rs 500 notes could be used for payment of utility bills like electricity and water, school fees, pre- paid mobile top-up, fuel purchase and airline ticket booking.
From December 3, fuel purchase, airline ticket booking at airport counters and toll payment at highways will be allowed only in lower denomination currency or the new 500 and 2,000 rupee notes.
Sources said the move to curtail use of old notes at petrol pumps and highway toll plazas follows reports of the facility being misused to launder black money.
