A hungry nine-month-old girl was crying incessantly for her mother, who was sleeping by her side. The baby’s grandmother was washing clothes nearby.
When the child’s cries failed to move the mother, the grandmother pushed her to get up and feed the kid. But instead, the mother strangled her daughter.
Now, the murderer’s mother — the only witness to the gory crime — will help the police in prosecuting her.
This horror story unfolded at a house in Kardampuri area in northeast Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar colony.
Shabana, the accused, had been staying with her parents and her nine-month-old daughter after separating from her husband, Anees, a week ago.
On Thursday, while Shabana was sleeping on the floor with the baby, her mother, Quraisha, was washing clothes nearby. When Shabana didn’t move despite the incessant cries of the baby, Quraisha asked her to feed the baby.
“The baby was hungry. When I asked Shabana to feed her, she got angry and abused me. She said, aaj main iska rona hamesha ke liye band kar deti hoon (today I will silence her cries forever), and then strangled the baby. By the time I managed to rescue her from Shabana’s clutches, the baby had lost consciousness,” said Quraisha, in her statement to the police.
A senior police officer said Quraisha rushed the baby to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Quraisha told the police that Shabana was depressed after her husband Anees filed for a divorce. Shabana has been arrested and a case of murder registered against her at the Jyoti Nagar police station.
