A blood trail, a hound search and a local intel led to the arrest of the prime accused behind the murder of the Tis Hazari court advocate.

A 38-year-old lawyer Rajeev Sharma was found murdered inside the court complex with severe injuries to his head.

Police said the absence of blood at the crime scene suggested that the body was moved.

However, the night guard didn’t see anyone enter or leave the premises after 10 pm suggesting that Sharma was murdered inside the court complex.

The CCTV footage showed no suspicious activity at the complex gates.

“At the time of being discovered, the body had already begun to stiffen indicating that Sharma had been murdered at least 12 hours before being found. Although, according to the night guard, the body had had to have been disposed of around 1: 30, after his last patrol,” said a police official.

A witness claimed to have last seen Sharma near a local dhaba (roadside eatery) within the premises. A dog squad brought-in for assistance quickly found the murder weapon, a pestle, hidden at the dhaba, said police.

A senior police official said that almost immediately a search was initiated for the employees, including the manager Dhanram Chaudhary. “Chaudhary was arrested from the nearby area after a search, although his associates are still missing,” said a police officer.

During interrogation, Chaudhary said Sharma went to the dhaba around 10:30 pm on Thursday night and began ordering food despite the eatery being closed.

“According to Chaudhary, Sharma was drunk and began demanding food. He first politely asked him leave but Sharma started abusing him, leading to a fistfight, during which Chaudhary grabbed a pestle and hit Sharma on the head,” said a police official.

At the time of the incident, four employees of Chaudhary were present at the dhaba, two of whom helped him dispose of the body.

“Dilip and Bahadur helped Chaudhary move the body from the dhaba to outside Sharma’s office nearby,” said a police official.

DCP (North) Madhur Verma said Chaudhary had been arrested but Dilip and Bahadur were on the run. The Delhi district bar association on Friday called a strike in light of the death. The Tis Hazari Bar Association also mourned Sharma’s death.
