Parents who always worry about their children’s activities at school now have a ‘tool’ with which they can keep a track of their wards. A school in east Delhi has put in place a digitised system wherein parents get a text message informing them of their children’s attendance record.
Sacred Heart Public School in Krishna Nagar installed a punching machine a few months ago to keep a tab on when a student arrives and when he/she leaves the school. The system sends an automatic SMS to parent about their child’s attendance. And with this worried calls from parents to find out whether their child had attended school on a particular day has almost stopped, the school claimed.
“We already have a biometric attendance system for our teachers. Though such a system is not in place for students, we could look into the possibilities of linking our present system through software wherein the students can also be taken care of. A lot of new technologies are also available and we are looking into other options,” said education minister Kiran Walia.
Besides keeping a tab on the students, the same system is also used for keeping a tab on teachers as well.
The school principal, being visually impaired, was finding it difficult to keep a track of students’ and teachers’ attendance. But with the new system in place, the principal now gets audio attendance reports of both teachers and students.
An NGO, called Schools and Teachers Innovating for Results (STIR), which works with teachers and principals to identify innovative educational practice, had installed this machine on the school premises.
“I also find it easier to keep a tab on the teachers as earlier they could lie to me but now everything is recorded in the system and I can listen to it. Also, monthly printouts are taken to check in and out timings of the teachers following which their salaries are released,” said Ajay Garg, principal of the school.
“Students often used to go off to other places after school hours were over because of which they would reach home late. But now, with this system, parents know what time they enter and leave school,” he added.
