Dislocated crane chokes Ashram intersection

delhi Updated: May 25, 2016 12:22 IST

NEW DELHI: Commuters crossing south Delhi’s Ashram intersection faced traffic diversions and severe traffic jams on Tuesday after a crane at the Metro construction site was dislocated after the Monday evening storm.

The situation is likely to remain the same for the next two days.

As a precautionary measure, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has closed traffic coming from the Delhi-Noida expressway side and heading towards Mathura Road and Bhogal.

“Traffic on Ring Road towards Mathura Road (along the Ashram flyover) and Bhogal (below Ashram flyover) from the DND Expressway side has been diverted since Tuesday morning. The damaged crane is being dismantled,” DMRC said.

Traffic police deployed additional staff to direct movement but it did not help much in easing commuter woes.

Many commuters were trying to figure their way through the new route, which added to the chaos.

“This is the route I take to work but this morning traffic was diverted. After asking everyone to take the turn, there was no official or signage to guide the way. It took me at least 30 minutes to find an exit through the colonies to the main road towards central Delhi,” said Ashutosh Sharma, who was travelling from Mayur Vihar to Connaught Place.

Officials said adequate traffic marshals and temporary signages had been deployed at crucial intersections to inform motorists.
