The worldwide relic pilgrimage of Italian saint Don Bosco will be held in the Capital on Friday. The relic, which is the hand of Don Bosco in a fiberglass replica of his body, will be brought to Don Bosco School, Alaknanda, and Holy Child Axillium School, Vasant Vihar.
Both schools have planned public functions to celebrate the pilgrimage that has travelled from Turin in Italy. Don Bosco was an Italian saint who founded the Society of St Francis de Sales. The Salesians are now the third largest men's order in the Catholic Church, with over 20,000 members in 130 countries. The Salesian Sisters, known as the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, are the second largest order of women religious with 14,000 members in 89 countries. He was canonized in the year 1934.
He worked for children and juvenile delinquents throughout his life, and was also against corporal punishment for students.
Teachers of Don Bosco School in Delhi have also put together a special anthem composed in praise of the historic relic.
The anthem 'A Relic to Reform' will be sung by 2,500 students of the school. The relic will be part of a special motorcade from W Block in GK 2 to Don Bosco School. The school has also brought out a special 12-page brochure entitled 'My Founder My Saint', which will be distributed to every person who visits the school on Friday.
"We expect 10,000 people to attend the day. Students have organised a cultural programme to celebrate the day," said Uma Nair, coordinator, Don Bosco School.
The relic will remain on the school premises and a special Mass will be held at 6.30pm. The relic started its journey from Turin in January 2009, and it will return to the parent church in 2015.
