After questions were raised over the lack of public transport during night hours, Delhi transport minister Ramakant Goswami has decided to urge Delhi Metro to extend its services till midnight for the convenience of commuters.
The gangrape victim and her male friend had boarded a chartered bus as a DTC bus was not available in Munirka on Sunday night. HT, in its report on December 18, had reported that non-availability of public transport facilities at night forced women to look for other options such as chartered buses.
Meanwhile, the minister has directed the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to further augment night service to provide connectivity to more places.
“DTC and cluster services operate from 5am to 11pm. I have directed DTC to improve connectivity during night hours. The Delhi police would be requested to provide security in buses at night,” said Goswami.
The minister has also directed the transport authority to ensure that GPS system is installed in all public vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Contract Bus Association has sought more time from the Delhi police to remove black films from their vehicle windows.
“We are willing to implement the guidelines but we request them to give us more time,” said Harish Sabharwal, general secretary of the association.
