In a first, Zakir Husain College will offer legal aid to the disadvantaged local population through a legal cell.
This effort has been undertaken by the college to make sure that those who can’t afford to take legal advice or hire a lawyer are not wronged. The college will collaborate with the Delhi Legal Aid Cell, from where lawyers and legal experts will be sourced.
“The purpose of setting up this cell is to ensure that those in need of legal assistance don’t have to compromise due to lack of money,” said Aslam Parvaiz, principal, Zakir Husain College.
The experiment is expected to start by October and is aimed at people living near the college. “We are planning to print pamphlets in Hindi as well as in Urdu to make sure that people get to know about this service,” Parvaiz added.
The idea to start a legal cell developed following the introduction of an optional add-on course in legal literacy.
“This cell will also be a great learning experience for our students who are interested in law. They will be able to understand the kind of legal problems one faces and what their solutions are. It is a great practical experience,” said Parvaiz.
The college has already set aside a room to counsel people who come for help. Delhi Legal Aid Cell will provide the professional legal assistance. So if someone economically weak wants to know the legalities behind an issue or if someone wants a lawyer to pursue a case, he can approach the college.
