DU decides on 4-yr course structure

First year not to be common for all students; two hours per week reserved for extracurricular activities, sports and NSS, Mallica Joshi reports.

The task force set up by the Delhi University administration has decided upon the structure of the four-year undergraduate programme that has to be presented in front of the Academic Council for approval on Monday.

Admission to the four-year programme, as per the proposal, will be on the basis of their class 12 marks in the discipline of their choice. The plan to make the first year common for all students was dropped as students choose their specialisation in class 11 and 12 itself.

Under the proposal, there would be 42 papers in the four years, out of which 20 papers will be from the student's chosen discipline, five from discipline-based application papers, 11 foundation papers which will be same for all and six papers from the second discipline which the student chooses.

The foundation courses will include courses in public health and environment, rural economic challenges and analytical ability.

“These courses will make the students more aware of the ground realities and will help them aid the country's growth. The paper in analytical ability will help them with their research work,” said Umesh Rai, member of the 61-member task force.

The four-year programme will also reserve two hours per week for extracurricular activities, sports, NSS and NCC.

“We want the children to have ample time to grow as individuals and participate in activities that aid character building. These two hours will be chalked out in the time table and teachers will have to participate in these activities as well,” said Rai.

Internal assessment in the traditional form will be replaced with presentations in the classrooms, which, according to task force members, will improve a student's communication skill as well.

The tutorials, which help smaller groups of students interact with the teacher and clarify the doubts that can't be addressed in class, will also remain.

If the structure is approved in the Academic Council on Monday, it will be presented in the Executive Council on Wednesday.
