Deen Dayal Upadhayaya College (DDU) in Karampura, one of the several Delhi government-funded colleges, is going to be Delhi University’s first multi-story college.
Presently functioning from a school building, the college will be shifted to a new building in Dwarka.
“After more than five years, plans for our new building have been approved. As we have been allocated 8 acres of land, compared to other colleges which function form 16 acres, we have to make the best of it. Therefore, the plan is to construct a 7-storey building, along with a basement,” said Dr Suresh Kumar Garg, the college principal.
But the flip side is due to Commonwealth Games 2010, the construction for the building has been stalled and the new college campus might not be seen before 2012.
“Though we wanted construction to begin immediately, the government’s focus at the moment is the upcoming Commonwealth Games. So plans have been stalled by 3 to 4 years,” Garg said.
Presently running 15 departments, the college plans to have two or three departments share a floor.
“Smaller departments which do not need much space, will be clubbed together on one floor, while other departments, such as botany and zoology, and electronics and physics might also have to end up sharing a floor,” the principal said.
