DU semester system to affect SOL students

Students planning to migrate to a regular colleges after completing their first year at the School of Open Learning (SOL), Delhi University, will be hugely disappointed next year.
The introduction of the semester system in regular colleges has ensured that SOL students will not be able to move into regular colleges, even if they happen to top the university.
While this problem will not be apparent this year, it will trouble students next year after their results are declared and they would want to move into day or evening colleges.
“While the colleges have moved to semester course, the distance learning programme is still working in the annual mode. Since the course as well as the calendar will be different, migration will not be possible from next year,” said JM Khurana, dean, Students’ Welfare, Delhi University.
Students are allowed to migrate from honours courses in SOL to programme courses in colleges under university guidelines.
Migration is generally not allowed in any of the honours courses by the university. However, in case of exceptionally meritorious students, migration to honours courses can be considered and are subject to approval of the Academic Council on individual merit of each case.
This practice was especially popular with good students who could not score well in Class 12 exams and would work hard in the first year at SOL. The minimum marks needed to get admission to the programmes are 45%.
Rajat Bhanot, who passed out from BA Programme at Dyal Singh College in 2008, used the benefit of the migration policy after completing his first year at SOL. “I could not do well in Class 12 exams, as I was suffering from jaundice while I sat for the boards. I took admission in SOL and then migrated. It is a great option,” he said.
