The good old centralised physical application forms may make a comeback in the coming session at Delhi University (DU).
In a move that is expected to bring relief to students, the university is planning to reintroduce application forms in addition to online applications.
The panel of principals that earlier submitted a report on ways to revamp the admissions process had suggested online registration as the best option to handle the large number of applications the university receives every year.
“We want to make sure that every student gets a chance to apply to the university, and while most applicants who want to study at DU know how to use computers and have access to the internet, the few who don’t should not be left out,” said a senior DU official, on condition of anonymity as a final decision in this regard has not been taken so far.
This is for the first time that DU will have online registrations. There are plans to set up facilitation centres at various points in the city to help students register.
“This is the first time that we are introducing online registration and we will help anyone who has a problem. Currently there are plans to set up 15 such centres,” said the official.
Physical application forms were done away with last year when the university did not have any form of pre-admission registration.
This year, however, both have returned.
According to officials, last years’ experiment was rejected outrightly by college principals, who forced the administration to bring back application forms.
Many principals, professors and the Delhi University Students’ Union had opposed the plan to have only online registration as they thought it would go against students from small towns and villages where internet penetration was low.
