Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday admitted that many people have been getting inflated water bills due to errors in the new system. She ensured that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) would look into all complaints.
“The DJB has recently introduced a revenue management system (RMS). This change involved the transfer of a huge amount of data. During cross-checking and verification, incidents of wrong billing have been reported by consumers. These errors are creeping up due to an elongated billing period and it is essential to look into them. A few errors are, in fact, due to earlier manual records,” the chief minister said.
Dikshit said a number of MLAs had raised concern over the inflated bills. After the issue was discussed at length, they decided to provide relief to the consumers.
Apparently with an eye on the elections, the chief minister waived off the accumulated late payment surcharge on bills. Dikshit told the Delhi assembly on Thursday that consumers would only have to pay the actual arrears and no penalty would be charged.
To ensure that consumers are not burdened by the huge payment they may have to make in one go, she gave the option of payment in installments till March 2014. This relief will be applicable from April 1.
“All domestic consumers have been allowed to make payment of actual arrears as reflected in the bill. They will not have to pay any penalty. We have given them the option of making the payment in six installments. In case they make are able to pay the full arrears by July 31, they are entitled to a further rebate of 30%,” said Dikshit.
She said the Jal Board has extended the floor-wise benefit to consumers with metered connections in slum clusters and resettlement colonies. To facilitate easy payment of bills, a number of kiosks are being opened.
“The DJB has introduced multiple modes of payment such as jeevan centres, kiosks, zonal offices and selected branches of specified banks so that the process of making payments gets easier and more convenient,” added Dikshit.
