Five people, including a 10-year-old girl, were killed and two others were injured in four separate accidents reported in the Capital in the past 24 hours.
The first accident was reported from outside AIIMS in south Delhi, where two chefs, working at a restaurant in Hauz Khas Village, were crushed to death by a speeding truck on the AIIMS flyover in the early hours of Monday.
The accident took place around 3 am and the victims were riding a motorcycle, which was hit and dragged for several metres by the truck. The deceased were identified as Manish and Anish, both in their early twenties. They were returning home after work when the accident happened.
Though the truck driver tried to flee with his vehicle, the staff of a PCR van patrolling the area chased the vehicles for a couple of kilometres and apprehended him and the helper.
The truck driver, identified as Mohammad Shafiq, a resident of Mewat in Haryana, has been arrested.A senior officer said that Shafiq did not stop the truck even when he realised that the motorcycle and its riders had come under the wheels of his vehicle.
The second accident was reported from near Mayur Vihar Metro station in which a 20-year-old engineering student was killed and her friend injured after the car they were travelling in turned turtle late on Sunday night.
Nancy Taneja, a resident of Govind Enclave in Delhi, died in the accident while her friend Priyank Kathuria suffered injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Police said Taneja was driving her Maruti Suzuki Swift car, while Kathuria was seated on the rear seat.
“When the car reached the Mayur Vihar metro station, it suddenly turned turtle. We received a call from a passerby and rushed the victims to Max Hospital. Taneja was pronounced brought dead by the doctors,” said a senior police officer, adding eyewitnesses told them that the car was at a very high speed.
In the third accident, a 10-year-old girl identified as Jiah was killed and her grandfather injured when the Scooty they were riding was hit by a speeding tempo in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh on Sunday evening. The errant driver, Sanjeev Kumar, 30, was arrested after passersby caught hold of him while he was trying to escape In the fourth accident, a 44-year-old TSR driver, Keasr, was killed on Sunday evening in Outer Delhi when his vehicle overturned.
