The body of a five-year-old boy, reported missing three days ago, was recovered buried inside a hastily-dug pit in northwest Delhi.
The incident comes a week after two siblings were found murdered after having been kidnapped for ransom by their own uncle.
Identified as Rohan, the victim, a student of lower kindergarten at a local government school, had gone missing from his residence in Kushak village near Swarup Nagar on Thursday evening.
“His family had approached the local police station on March 7 and lodged a missing person’s report. A case was registered soon after. No ransom calls were received by the family during the victim’s absence. We are investigating the case from all angles,” said P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police (northwest).
According to police, Rohan’s body — half buried in the ground — was recovered after a village resident spotted a dark figure moving mysteriously in a field around 3am.
The eyewitness, police claimed, raised an alarm and rushed to the spot with other residents to investigate even as the mysterious figure, having sensed trouble, disappeared from the scene.
“When locals reached the spot where the movement had been noticed, Rohan’s body was recovered. An initial medical examination revealed that the cause of his death was a fatal injury to his skull,” said an officer investigating the case.
Police said they were investigating whether personal enmity of the victim’s father —Chandrabhan, a security guard at a factory which manufactures RO water purifiers — with someone in the village had anything to do with Rohan’s murder.
“The victim’s father claims he didn’t have any personal enmity with anyone. We are investigating his claim. We have detained some neighbours and other local residents for questioning,” said the officer.
Last Saturday, the decaying bodies of two siblings, who had been abducted from outside their east Delhi school four days ago, were found dumped on a railway track in central Delhi’s Pragati Maidan.
The siblings — seven-year-old Mansij and his five-year-old sister Yashvi Kumar, as per findings of an initial post-mortem examination — seemed to have been murdered hours after being abducted from their private east Delhi school on Tuesday afternoon.
