Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) poll campaign chief Narendra Modi is now the most followed Indian politician on Twitter.
He has 1,821,1119 fans-- about 391 more than the hitherto Twitter leader Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has. Tharoor, however, retains the second slot with 1,820728 fans, if one goes by the latest count.
Well, Modi fans are happy. They project the e-race as a positive pre-2014 poll indicator. But, those in the Congress camp say social media popularity can change overnight and refuse to buy it as a pre-poll indicator. Others say popularity charm and poll battle are a different ball game.
Whatever, the social media watchdog pinstorm.com is playing politically safe-- It shows Modi with 1,819,401 followers---915 less than Tharoor’s leading count of 1,820,316 twiterrati. But, it keeps Modi on top of the list with 90.3 ‘India Influence Count’ (IIC) and Tharoor in the second slot with 88.6 IIC.
Aam Aadmi shaker Arvind Kejriwal has outpaced Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with 6,66,971 followers. Singh slips to the sixth slot with 6,36,066 fans.
BJP leader Sushma Swaraj remains 10th on the cyber popularity graph with 521,808 followers.
Political observers say cyber popularity can be misleading as it carries the world figures. But, they do admit that social media campaign is going to be a major player in the national elections. Some attribute Modi’s jump in the cyber popularity to his engaging dotcom magicians Rajesh Jain and BG Mahesh to drive his social media campaign.
