Close to a week after Bahujan Samaj Party leader and businessman Deepak Bhardwaj was gunned down at his south Delhi farmhouse, four people, including two suspected contract killers, were arrested and another suspect was detained on Monday.
The arrested were identified as Sunil Mann alias Sonu and Purushottam Rana alias Monu - the suspected contract killers.
A suspect named Amit was allegedly driving the Skoda car at the time of the incident, and Rakesh alias Bhola, was the car's owner.
On Monday morning, the crime branch started trailing Mann and Rana acting on a tip-off that they were headed to the Patiala House district courts to surrender.
"While Mann was able to give us the slip and entered a metropolitan magistrate's courtroom while it was in session, Rana was arrested before he could enter the court premises by the local police," said a senior crime branch officer.
The motive behind the murder still remains unknown with the police citing the ongoing interrogation of the accused for being tight-lipped.
"Investigation is still underway and it is too early to say what the precise motive for the murder was," said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south).
"At the moment, it would be too early to reveal the identity of the main conspirator."
On Saturday, HT had reported about the Delhi Police's decision to arrest Rakesh at the earliest after he admitted to having knowledge of the conspiracy to murder Bhardwaj, who was killed in cold blood at his Rajokri farmhouse, 'The Nitesh', on the morning of March 26.
Amit was arrested from northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri on Sunday while Rakesh had been detained on Friday after the recovery of the Skoda from his possession.
Sources said another person named Rakesh, who is from northwest Delhi, had been detained on the charge of having ordered the hit on Bhardwaj.
