Two persons, including a 29-year-old auto rickshaw driver, died after a New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) garbage dumper’s collision with an electricity pole triggered a series of accidents on south Delhi’s Barapullah flyover on Thursday evening, police said.

According to police, the accident took place around 5:15 pm on the elevated stretch connecting Lodhi Colony area with Sarai Kale Khan when an NDMC dumper collided with an electricity pole, tilted and crushed an auto rickshaw.

"Prima facie, it seems the electricity pole fell on the dumper, threw it off balance and made it fall on a TSR which was plying adjacent to it. The same pole hit a biker who was travelling parallel the auto rickshaw," said a senior police officer.

The auto driver died instantly and his vehicle was reduced to a heap of metal. Identified as Vijay Kumar, he hailed from Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and was residing temporarily in east Delhi’s Ganesh Nagar area.

The impact of the pole sent the biker — identified as Sanjay Kumar of Sunlight Colony area — hurtling off the flyover and he landed several feet on the ground below, police said.

“Our employer asked me to find out when Vijay would return from his shift and I was calling him desperately on his mobile phone. But when the call finally got connected, a police officer was on the line and told me that he had been disfigured beyond recognition,” said Ram Babu, 24, Vijay’s uncle.

The police said the driver, Abdur Rehman, who had been engaged by the NDMC on contract, had been arrested.
