A drive in your CNG -powered car just became costlier. The Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has increased prices for the fuel by Rs 2 per kilogram in the Capital.
The new prices came into effect from Friday midnight.
Officials of IGL — the company that distributes Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida and Greater Noida — said CNG will now cost Rs 32 per kg in Delhi and Rs 35.90 per kg in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad.
There are more than 4lakh CNG-fuelled vehicles — both commercial and private — in Delhi and the National Capital Region. This is fifth increase in CNG prices in 2011.
IGL managing director Rajesh Vedvyas said prices have been increased due to major increase in the input cost of the natural gas.
Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh, however, said the increase in prices would not affect the fate of the public transport system, which runs entirely on CNG.
Auto-rickshaw drivers,, however, said auto fare should also be increased.
“We’ll face the brunt of inflated CNG prices. Auto fares should also be increased. Otherwise, we’ll go on a strike,” said Triloki Kumar, an autorickshaw driver.
Meanwhile, CNG vehicle owners feel cheated. “We switched to CNG because it was cheaper. But in future, CNG prices could be at par with petrol prices,” said Sweta Kapoor, who drives a CNG-propelled car.
