Delhi Police on Sunday arrested five men who were part of a gang of criminals that used to hijack consignment trucks of various companies. The gang would plant a driver in the company. The driver would then divert the consignment and later sell the stolen goods to a scrap dealer.
The arrest came after the investigation in a case where a truck loaded with air conditioners went missing. The truck was recovered near ICD, Okhla, but half the consignment, worth Rs11 lakh, was missing.
The gang’s mastermind, Hare Ram alias Ajay, had surrendered himself in UP in a separate case to avoid arrest by Delhi Police. Ajay had first obtained employment with the transporter using a fake name and address and had then recruited a helper. “Dinesh Prajapati, manager of PICL India, reported to police that they had picked up a consignment of electric motors, meant for fitting in air conditioners, from Faridabad. The consignment was meant for export to Dubai and was dispatched on January 31 but it did not reach ICD till February 3,” Ajay Chaudhry, Additional Commissioner of Police (southeast) said.
The half empty container was later found abandoned near ICD and the driver and cleaner were missing. During the investigation, police found that Ajay had been working with GS Cargo for the past 2-3 months. The employer had not yet got Ajay’s credentials verified.
Questioning of drivers in ICD revealed that Ajay’s original name is Hare Ram and he is also known as ‘Moochad’ because of his big moustache. “A police team went to Balia, UP, and found that Ajay had surrendered to the UP police in an old case. With the court’s permission, the police brought Hare Ram to Delhi on production warrant,” Chaudhry said.
After joining the transport company, Ajay employed Sunny as his helper. They first took the consignment to Palam Vihar, Gurgaon, and contacted Naim and Khalil who were in touch with one Jitender, a friend of Sunny. Naim and Khalil agreed to buy the consignment at half the rate. The final buyer of the consignment was one Faim of Ahmedabad. All of them except Sunny have been arrested.
