The University of Delhi offers courses in Geography at four levels, starting from B.A. (Hons.), through M.A. and M.Phil. to Ph.D. The B.A. (Hons.) programme is offered by eleven affiliated colleges. Besides these, there are a few colleges that offer Geography as an optional in their B.A. (Programme).
The colleges offering BA (Hons) Geography include Aditi Mahavidyalaya, Bhimrao Ambedkar, Dyal Singh, Kalindi, Kirori Mal, Kamla Nehru, Miranda House, Shivaji, Swami Shradhanand, Shaheed Bhagat Singh (morning and evening). Since the discipline acts as a link between social and physical sciences, the educational background required at the +2 level could be arts, science or commerce. The cut off for admission tends to vary from 70 to 87 percent depending on the perceived rating of the colleges.
At undergraduate level, the course covers a broad range of subjects including geomorphology, climatology, and oceanography, reflecting the physical science orientation of the discipline.
Courses like geography of development and social and urban geography cover the humanities orientation.
With appropriate add on courses (diploma / certificate) the career options include employment in private and public sector organisations dealing with GIS and remote sensing, tourism, environmental journalism, etc.
With the broad base of knowledge that the programme offers, the subject is also a very popular option for the civil service examinations.
Some can branch off to teaching Geography.
