To ensure availability of doctors in rural areas, the government is considering a proposal to make one year rural posting mandatory for MBBS students before they get permission to practice in other areas.

Informing the Lok Sabha, Minister of State of Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi said the one year rural posting is proposed to be treated compulsory before permanent registration is given.

She said this step is being considered to ensure that doctors are available in rural areas of the country.

Lakshmi said MBBS students after passing out from the medical colleges will have to work for one year in remote areas before they are granted permanent registration to practice medicine.
