Three girl students were killed and three others critically injured in a high speed car crash early Thursday morning on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida.
“It seems like the car was travelling at a very high speed and the driver lost control and rammed into the divider. The impact of the accident was such that the car turned turtle and landed in the opposite lane after several flips,” said superintendent of police (rural) Brijesh Singh.
The group was on its way back from celebrating New Year’s Eve in Agra in a Hyundai Verna when the accident occurred around 2am at the Dankuar area of Greater Noida.
Three of the four female students sitting at the back were killed on the spot. The injured, including two male students sitting in front, were rescued from the mangled car and rushed to hospital.
Police said they hadn’t recorded statements of the injured since they were unable to speak.
“Once they recover, a blood test will be conducted to check traces of alcohol in their body. So far, we have not found anything that points to them being drunk,” Singh said.
“Both the boys were rescued from the front seats. Either of them could have been driving the car,” he added.
Both airbags saved the lives of the two men on the front seat, a senior police officer said.
Two of the deceased -- Akankhya and Ayushi – were enrolled in an MBA course at a private university in Greater Noida, officials said. The third victim, Shivani, had come to celebrate New Year’s Eve with Akankhya, both residents of Meerut. The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem, he said.
The car is owned by Shekhar, a resident of Greater Noida, police said. He, his friend Sumit and Laveena are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
