Gurgaon cops go easy on corporate honcho who abused policewoman
The Gurgaon Police seems to be deliberately delaying action against the top corporate boss who was booked for assaulting a policewoman on duty at MG Road on Monday.delhi Updated: Oct 31, 2013 12:47 IST
A day after a top corporate boss was booked for abusing and assaulting a policewoman on duty on MG Road, it transpires that the Gurgaon Police failed to arrest him right away on her complaint and even tried to hush up the matter.
Rajeev Karwal, 50, founder and CEO of consultancy firm Milagrow, apparently lost his cool after being pulled over for driving on the wrong side by an all-woman quick reaction team on Monday night.
But instead of showing remorse, he allegedly used abusive language on a 32-year-old assistant sub inspector (ASI), pushed her around and stepped out of his Mercedes to intimidate the policewomen.
As the arguments went on for a good 15 minutes, a few policemen and 21 woman members of a Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed on the Mall Mile reached the spot. Despite the heavy police presence and the ASI’s request that Karwal be arrested on the spot, he drove off.
The cops saw Karwal driving into Heritage City apartments but again, nobody tried to stop him.
It was only after the ASI called up DCP (east) Nazneen Bhasin that the police sprang into action.
Prompt action was taken immediately after I received the call from the ASI. The man was arrested by the team,” Bhasin said on Wednesday.
Karwal was booked on Tuesday for criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of a woman, assault, using obscene language, rash driving and obstructing a public
servant from doing his/her duty. He was later let off on bail.
Even after lodging the case, the police reportedly did not disclose his identity. Repeated attempts to contact Karwal went unanswered.
The all-woman RAF team was deployed on MG Road in August in a move to make Gurgaon safer for women. This team of 28 works round the clock to check harassment, misconduct and other crimes against women.
