Hi-tech detectors to keep Metro safe

"The old hand-held metal detectors — many of them defunct — have been replaced by the new ones, which are high-sensitive," said Udayan Banerjee, DIG, CISF, who looks after the security of Delhi Metro.
According to CISF sources, these devices called ‘Garett metal detectors’ have been procured from a US-based company. "These hand-held detectors with ultra-quick response time and extreme accuracy provide uniform sensitivity and tip pinpointing to detect ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel weapons, contraband or other metallic objects. The advanced circuitry of the detectors is highly sensitive and does not need to be adjusted," they said.
Garett detectors are used to frisk people at airports and during sports events in the US and other first-world countries. It has recently been introduced at the Delhi international airport and Airport Metro Express.
Two such devices — one to check men and the other for women commuters — have been allotted to most of the 135 stations, while more detectors have been allotted to busy, interchange stations and underground section of the Metro network.
Recently, Delhi Metro chief E Sreedharan had expressed concern over the vulnerability of commuters to terror strikes. He said, “The underground section is at least five times more prone to security risks.”
Keeping this in view, the agency is planning to replace the other security gadgets like scanners and x-ray machines with the upgraded ones. “Our aim is to provide security to Metro commuters at par with the arrangement at the IGI Airport. We have introduced bunch domination groups to profile commuters and conduct anti-sabotage checks in Metro trains during morning and evening peak hours,” said a CISF official.
The agency has increased the strength of guards at high footfall stations like Chandni Chowk, Kashmere Gate, New Delhi and Central Secretariat.
