The Delhi Police have detained the three alleged hired guns who shot dead millionaire realtor-politician Deepak Bhardwaj and also questioned his wife and sons in connection with the sensational murder.
The police, said sources, were sure that a property dispute led to the murder of Bhardwaj, who with his declared assets of Rs. 600 crore was the richest candidate in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. All that remained to be ascertained was whether the murder plot was hatched by a family member or a business rival, the sources said.
Bhardwaj, who was shot at point blank range at his south Delhi farmhouse in Rajokri during a morning walk on March 26, was estranged from his family.
His wife Ramesh Kumari lives with their son Nitesh in Dwarka. The second son, Hitesh, lives in Vasant Kunj. Though both the sons manage Bhardwaj’s various businesses, they have nothing in their name, which police suspect could have soured ties with their father.
Investigating teams had definite leads and were working on them, Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south) said. The silver-grey Skoda Laura used by killers had been recovered, she said.
Identifying the alleged hired killers as Purushottam, Sunil and Pradeep, who were detained on Wednesday and are residents of northwest Delhi's Alipur, a police officer said they would be arrested soon.
"We have also detained the owner of the Skoda car, one Ramesh. He, too, belongs to the same locality in Alipur," he said.
The Delhi Police also rounded up three men from neighbouring Haryana's Jind on Tuesday night.
"Delhi Police raided Baxi Mohalla of Jind and recovered a Santro car used in the crime and three persons from the house of one Narender Kumar," Jind DSP (headquarters) Om Singh Balhara said.
The Delhi Police denied that they recovered a Santro from the trio.
