Family members of a 21-year-old student who died of severe lung infection that resulted in multiple organ failure have blamed doctors of Safdarjung Hospital for his death.
Imphal resident Mutum Bony Jajo, 21, died at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj on September 16. His family had shifted him there on September 14 evening after his condition allegedly deteriorated at the government-run Safadarjung Hospital.
The family says the Manipur University student would have survived had he been given ICU treatment at Safdarjung Hospital on time. They have filed a police complaint against Safdarjung Hospital at Vasant Kunj police station.
“We have received a complaint from the family and they are blaming the hospital for negligence. We can only file an FIR after we get the post-mortem report and have referred it to Indian Medical Association for their opinion. After they (IMA) certify negligence, we will file an FIR,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
According to the family, Bony was suffering from lung infection and chest pain. He was first admitted at the emergency of AIIMS on September 12, where he was discharged after being given basic treatment. The same night, when he felt extreme uneasiness in the chest, his family rushed him to Safdarjung hospital.
"After much effort, doctors started treating him, but very casually. "One doctor told a family member, 'He (Mutum) is very young and hence will fight it out. There are others who need the ICU bed more than him'," alleged his brother Hopeson Jajo.
His family says his condition continued to worsen. "Later, doctors made an incision on the left side of his chest, apparently to take out 'bad blood/infection' from his lungs and left him lying like this for 48 hours'," alleged Jajo.
The family alleged Bony suffered seven heart attacks on the day he was first admitted to Safdarjung but the doctors did not inform them about it.
Two days later, the family moved him to Fortis without his medical records as Safdarjung Hospital refused to give it. Safdarjung Hospital authorities refused to comment on the matter.
