A 22-year-old hotel management graduate, with her exemplary display of courage, has set an example for other working women in the Capital.
Akanksha, who works with The Lalit Hotel, not only wrestled with the thief who had snatched her phone but also held on to him till the police arrived and arrested him.
Akanksha was walking towards her home in Shadipur village when the incident took place at 8.10 pm on Wednesday on the main Patel Road near a Metro pillar.
Narrating the entire incident, Akanksha told Hindustan Times that she was returning home from a fitness centre when the snatcher attacked her.
“I was talking to my mother over the phone when a youthin his twenties snatched my Nokia 5233 model phone from my hand and tried to run away. I ran behind him and chased him until I caught hold of his shirt from the back. I overpowered him and started screaming for help which caught the attention of a security guard who made a PCR call,” said Akanksha. She held on to the snatcher till a PCR van arrived there.
Within minutes, Akanksha said, the SHO of Patel Nagar, Ritu Raj along with his team arrived at the spot and took the snatcher in their custody.
“Even though my parents had warned me against confronting anti-social elements, I never hesitate or fear teaching them hard lessons for their misdemeanor,” she added.
Impressed by her commendable bravery, the Delhi Police have announced a reward of Rs1,000 in cash and a commendation letter.
Devesh Chandra Srivastava, additional commissioner of police (central) said, “It was an exemplary bravery shown by the girl and we recognise such acts. We have decided to reward her as she helped us nab a snatcher, who has been identified as Ranjeet. He hails from Jharkhand.”
